Realistic, Symbolic and Figurative Fantasy and Dreamworld Cold Wax Painting by Encaustic and Cold Wax Artist. Leonie.e.Brown. Painting of young woman looking over her shoulder at dying swan. Highly symbolic image with great spiritual meaning.

I aim to make art that not only tells my story but all our stories. To speak to the abused, the down-trodden, the hopeless, the lost, the lonely, the shamed, the orphan and the abandoned.

Eased by Your warmth and grace, I lift my head to see your face. You know me full well. You find me.

To tell the story that will catch your heart and break it to pieces. This is the story of a broken life and a locked heart. The story of innocence lost and life restored. Of substance and hope lost. Of loneliness and abandonment, fear and shame. Of walls so high that none could enter. But, through the innocence of another life, in the whiteness of purity, hope is restored.

Spiritual Insights

You see me hide near your tranquil mirror where I find solace.

Poem by Kim Brown

In the beginning, was the One. Intrinsic humanity burns my skin. Brandishing hot desire over my cool innocence. Ineffaceable blemish scars my conscience. And the One was with Perfection. My sacred substance – now virtue lost. Wholly abandoned, my blood crusts over my youthful innocence. The One was Perfection. Caution hurdles as it chases soft expressions, finding only jagged taunts. Rancid words are my food – none satisfy. All was made through Him. Impiety has ravished the fathers. Reticence has muzzled the mothers. Race me to my death. Save me from my life. In Him was Life. Dark water stirs, you move in silence.  You see me hide near your tranquil mirror. Deep pools like a looking glass reflect only you. I find solace. Your eyes don’t judge me – my matted extrinsic shell entombs me. The allure of your purity, like silk and blazing white. Life was the Light of humanity. My feral eyes have seen so much life…death.  You come close unafraid. Eased by your warmth and grace, I lift my head to see your face. Radiance permeates. You are beautiful, I am not. The Light shines in the darkness. To feel is to hurt, I can’t, I won’t – I run. Back to my cerebral fairy-tale castle. No walls to protect, no human-divine.  Darkness has not overcome You. I cannot understand you, I cannot captivate you. My pain pierces your center.  My blood is on your bosom, why do you stay? The world does not know You. You know me full well. To all who receive You You found me. To all who believe in You Like shadows, my sadness is released. This silhouette of existence illuminated. You call me Your own. Your breath ransoms my inhale.  My barrenness for your crest. My guilt for your dignity. Fear takes wings on pronoia. No flesh, no blood, no man but of Perfection Himself. You would die for me…how can I live for you…

The Message

I aim to make art that not only tells my story but all our stories. To speak to the abused, the down-trodden, the hopeless, the lost, the lonely, the shamed, the orphan and the abandoned.

To tell the story that will catch your heart and break it to pieces, so that it can be restored to a new life. My goal is to inspire and bring hope to those who see my work. I want to tell a story that makes you look more carefully at the spiritual and physical world around them, to discover beauty in the darkness of what life can be.”
Each painting gets designed and developed with a specific message in mind. The message is meant to make the viewer think and question their deepest fears and faith. It’s meant to ask the question: If this is what I fear, what do I believe in?
Her work is inspired by her own journey through very difficult circumstances.

Symbolism of the Swan

The swan is symbol of light, love, romance, death, transformation, poetry, and melancholy passion. In the Christian tradition, the swan symbolizes purity and grace and is emblematic of the love of God,  grace, beauty, devotion, love, fidelity, purity, peace, partnership, elegance, energy, protection, calmness, creativity, and transformation. Combining the elements of air and water, they also embody eternal life.

Symbolic meaning of Blue

Blue represents depth, trust, loyalty, sincerity, wisdom, confidence, stability, faith, and intelligence. The colour blue, according to many Bible scholars, represents Heaven. Blue is the colour of the sky and a reminder of the heavenly realm.

Symbolic meaning of Silver

“Never erase your past. It shapes who you are today and will help you to be the person you’ll be tomorrow.”
– Ziad K. Abdelnour.

Silver is related to the moon and the ebb and flow of the tides – it is fluid, emotional, sensitive and mysterious and signals a time of reflection and a change of direction as it illuminates the way forward. It is time to reflect on the past and move into the future. Your past does not dictate your future.
You cannot go back to your past or jump to your future. The only constant moment you have in your life is the present one.

“Yesterday’s the past, tomorrow’s the future, but today is a gift. That’s why it’s called the present.”
– Bil Keane.

Never erase your past. It shapes who you are today and will help you to be the person you'll be tomorrow.

Sneak Peak on the Painting

Art Materials

This painting was created using Silver Foil, Inks, Oils and Cold Wax.

What is Cold Wax?

Cold Wax Painting is a style of oil painting in which the artist mixes a wax medium into the paint and uses the thickened body of paint to create a heavily textured surface. You can paint with a small amount of cold wax medium to make your paint matt instead of glossy and this would probably still be considered regular oil painting. But if you use a substantial amount of cold wax medium in your oil paint then most painters would call that ‘Cold Wax Painting’. Cold wax painters are often very experimental, as the medium leans itself to it.

Cold Wax is an oil painting medium which is a buttery soft paste made of wax mixed with a small amount of solvent and resin. The cold wax paste is mixed with the oil paint on the palette. Cold wax adds body, transparency, and depth to the oil paint. It also speeds up drying time, increases the paint’s work ability, and does not require the special ventilation of encaustic.

Once I discovered Encaustic Wax Art, I immediately fell in love with the possibilities of this medium. Unfortunately I could not find anyone to teach me, and so began a journey of discovery which is still ongoing. During the search for information, I found out about Cold wax. Because I could not find any local teachers or materials, so I approached one of the local paint manufacturers, and together we created both the encaustic and Cold wax Medium. I love the expressive interaction with this very tactile material. You have to really get in there. In mixing Cold Wax with oils, Ive been able to use the transparency and luminosity of the wax and paint combo to create incredible visual depth.
